The Tourism Industry Development Fund provides tourism operators in regional SA with funding for the development of improved regional SA tourism products and experiences that develop diverse and sustainable tourism experiences

The Tourism Industry Development Fund aims to:   

  • Improve tourism infrastructure and experiences that appeal to target markets
  • Grow economic benefit via increased visitor expenditure
  • Create new jobs and develop skills
  • Encourage further development by the private sector in infrastructure and visitor facilities
  • Encourage businesses to working collaboratively
  • Implement sustainable business practices



There are two streams in the Tourism Industry Development Fund, outlined below:

stream 1: regional infrastructure projects

  • To develop or enhance tourism infrastructure, facilitate new private sector investment in building new accommodation or refurbishing existing properties within regional South Australia
  • To support private projects that require infrastructure build or upgrades to better provide a regional tourism experience such as new attractions

stream 2: regional product and experience development projects

  • To develop new products and/or enhance existing products and visitor experiences within regional South Australia
  • To support regional products and experiences that align with SATC’s marketing focus such as food and wine, nature and wildlife, cultural, coastal and outback, and soft adventure


Level of support

Funding of between $20,000 and $500,000

Applicants can seek grants from $20,000 to $500,000 (excluding GST) with a maximum of 30 per cent State Government grant of the total project value


Eligible activities

Examples of how the funding could be used include:

  • new accommodation or expansion builds
  • refurbishment or renovations of existing accommodation
  • non-fixed assets such as furniture and fittings
  • transportation including, but not limited to, vehicles, bikes and boats
  • infrastructure to enhance visitor engagement, including provedores, cellar doors and interactive displays
  • infrastructure required to develop a new tour offering utilising existing products and experiences


Eligible small business applicants

South Australian regional tourism operators

To be eligible, your business/project must be located in at least 1 of the following regions:

  • Adelaide Hills
  • Barossa
  • Clare Valley
  • Eyre Peninsula
  • Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Flinders Ranges and Outback
  • Kangaroo Island
  • Limestone Coast
  • Murray River, Lakes and Coorong
  • Riverland
  • Yorke Peninsula

Additionally, you must:

  • be a private sector business (including sole trader, partnership, company, trust or business cluster)
  • have an Australian business number (ABN) and be registered for goods and services tax (GST)
  • have been operating for a minimum of 12 months and be financially viable


Important dates

Applications close 5.00 pm 31 March 2022 or when funds are exhausted whichever comes first

Successful projects

A total of 42 regional tourism development projects have been granted funding under the Tourism Industry Development Fund (as at 11 April 2021)

The 42 projects are spread across all 11 of South Australia’s tourism regions and have a combined project value of more than $25 million and grant amount of $6.6 million
