Overview

The $1.04 billion Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) supports the Australian Government’s commitment to:

  • drive economic growth
  • build stronger regional communities into the future

For Round Five, there is a total of $200 million available, with $100 million dedicated to tourism-related infrastructure projects

The Infrastructure Projects Stream supports projects that provide economic and social benefits to regional and remote areas. The projects can be either construction of new infrastructure or the upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure. The Infrastructure Projects Stream only supports investment ready project

For most projects grant funding will be up to either 50% or 75% of your eligible project costs. Your location will determine the percentage of grant funding you can receive

You may apply for a partial or full exemption to your contribution requirement if you can demonstrate that you are experiencing exceptional circumstances

Your project will need to deliver economic and social benefits to a regional or remote community

 

Outline

The BBRF supports projects that provide economic and social benefits to regional and remote area

It aims to drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future

Specifically, to provide benefits to the tourism industry to assist in mitigating the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic

 

Level of support

Grants of $20,000 to $10 million to cover 50% or 75% of eligible project costs

Your location will determine the percentage of grant funding you will receive

Application for a partial or full exemption will be accepted if you can demonstrate you are experiencing exceptional circumstances

 

Eligible activities

Projects must deliver economic and social benefits to a regional or remote community

Eligible projects include:

  • construction of new infrastructure, or
  • upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure,
  • replacement of infrastructure (only where there is significant increase in benefit), and
  • not have started yet

Half of the funding is dedicated to tourism-related infrastructure projects and eligible businesses must provide benefits to the tourism industry

The funding supports only investment ready projects

 

Eligible small business applicants

To be eligible you must have an Australian Business Number (ABN)

You must also be one of the following:

  • An incorporated not-for-profit organisation
  • An Australian local government agency or body as defined in the glossary of the grant opportunity guidelines
  • A non-distributing cooperative

Applications will only be accepted if the project is in an eligible location outlined in section 5.2 of the grant opportunity guidelines. You must also provide evidence of how you will provide your share of the project costs

You are not eligible if you are:

  • A for-profit organisation
  • An individual, partnership, or trust (an incorporated trustee may apply on behalf of a not-for-profit trust organisation)
  • A Commonwealth, state or territory government agency or body (including government business enterprises) with the exception of those organisations referred to in the grant opportunity guidelines section 4.1
  • A university, technical college, school, or hospital
  • A Regional Development Australia committee

How to apply

Applicants should read the grant opportunity guidelines and sample grant agreement before applying

Applications will be assessed against the eligibility criteria as well as the assessment criteria

Funding will only be considered for applications that score at least 60% against each assessment criterion

  • Assessment criterion 1: Economic benefits of your project for the region (15 points)
  • Assessment criterion 2: Social benefits of your project for the region (15 points)
  • Assessment criterion 3: Capacity, capability, and resources to deliver the project (15 points)
  • Assessment criterion 4: impact of funding on your project (5 points)
